This I believe…

I am a swimmer and I believe that all obstacles are 99% mental. With everything you do there is always that an obstacle that you must overcome. In each of these obstacles, both are testing physically and mentally. Each time you are tested to perform, you know that you have the adequate skills, but sometimes you’re mentally unwilling. The outcome of each obstacle depends not on your skill, but you mentality. You must know the outcome before you perform.

There are days when I am entangled in pain all over, and each of these days the chances to not go or to take a break are presented. Physically, my body wants to just stop and allow a rest, but it is my mind that gives me the drive to push fourth. It is my mentality that allows me to be who I am in sports and in life. It is what separates me from others that choose to give into physical pain. Yes, there are people who are better at me at things, and often tend to give up. Their skill is better, but that just shows that if your will is greater, then you determine the result. When I am doubtful in my physical abilities to finish something, then I am often slower to do it or to even finish it at all. But, if I have the mental strength and the knowingness to prevail, then I surely will.

A direct reference to my life is in the swimming event 50 yard freestyle. The 50 yard freestyle is comprised of just a mere two lanes, the shortest event in competitive swimming. With the 50 freestyle being so short everything has to be executed perfectly, the start, the turn, the stroke, and the kick. It is extremely hard to shave time of an event so short. If it is done over and over and the same time is produced with the same stroke, then it doesn’t come down to your ability to swim fast. It comes down to you will to improve and to win.

Not just in swimming obstacles, but in life obstacles your mentality is the main factor in the outcome. Often times, people rely too much on their abilities to accomplish things. Knowing and believing truly that you can do something will give you the edge over everyone. Most people who are doubtful about things tend to fail quicker and more often than those who are not.

Being superior physically is not enough to be successful, having the mental superiority will put you one step ahead of everyone else. The way to really proceed past an obstacle is not to improve physically, although this may help, it will never get you where you want or need to be. Having that drive will give you the persistence and strength you need to excel in anything you so choose, this I believe.
