Icy Blue Eyes
“No Please! I’ll do anything. I promise I’ll leave!”
“It’s too late.” He held the shiny mysterious black object and with the spasm of the finger he pulled the trigger; she fell. He did not so much hear her shriek as he saw her flimsy legs turn in and collapse. She lay there with her eyes open. They stared back at him just as they always had; the desperate agony of wanting to be accepted into his heart. Well she never could and he had made sure of that. He grabbed the helpless body and dragged it out into the backyard where he had already dug a hole out of the dark earthly soil. He threw her body into the hole and began to shove dirt onto her. Her right arm lay under her back, and her feet were turned it making her look uncomfortable and helpless. He chucked the gun into the hole and walked away as though nothing had happened.

The chill of the dark icy room was unbearable. He slid farther under his covers. “Please leave me alone! Go away!” The floating translucent object circled around his bed once more. He put his head completely under the covers and closed his eyes. He thought if he just couldn’t see it, it would go away. After five minutes of absolute silence except for the whirling of the wind he decided to peek out of his covers. He glanced up opening his eyes. The spirits icy blue eyes stared back at him. He screamed as loud as he could; crying hysterically. Hastily his father entered the room just as the spirit was disappearing through the opened window.
“Those eyes, those eyes…they’ll haunt me for the rest of my life!”
“Which eyes? What are you talking about?” His father laid both his hands around his 15 year old son while he cried. Adam had been having these strange nights ever since his step mother had disappeared three months ago. The police had searched for possible evidence of what had happened to her, but found none. They eventually had given up after months of searching. “Now try to get some sleep.”
After his dad left Adam stared up at the ceiling. He knew those eyes from anybody. It was his stepmoms and the last time he had seen them…he walked toward his open window. The full moon glistened from the sky. The light cast a shadow where part of the ground had been raised up from the rest of the backyard.

Adam?” The cold raspy voice whispered in his ear. He awoke looking at his alarm clock that read 3:30 am. He turned facing and starting right through those icy blue eyes again. He was just about to scream when the spirit spoke.
“Please don’t scream. It’s me your step mother.”
“What? I don’t understand…”
“I know it’s hard to understand, but I have been roaming around for the past three months waiting for the opportunity to talk to you. I do not blame you for what you did. I know it must have been hard for you when your parents divorced. I tried everything I could for your acceptance, but I guess it wasn’t good enough.”
Adam became furious, “If it wasn’t for you my parents would still be happily married. I wouldn’t need to make weekend visits away from my friends to see my mother. You ruined everything and I hate you for it. That’s why I had to do what I did…”
She began to pull an object out of her pocket. Adam watched with intensity as the object became more visible. Five seconds went by and then he shrieked. He turned around in his bed and was about to run just as the cold sharp edge of the knife pierced his spine. He twisted his body and curled into a ball. There was one last moan and then he was gone.
“And that’s why I had to do what I just did. I didn’t blame you for what you did to me, but it didn’t mean I wouldn’t take revenge.”
She drifted down the hall towards the once familiar cracked door. There stood her husband sleeping. “I’m sorry Rich, but like my mother always said ‘An eye for an eye”. She took one last look at him and then perplexed into the ground where she now lays all year round right beside her stepson.
