The car ride was taking longer than usual. It seemed like we were only going 5 miles per hour. My iPod was not satisfying my need for entertainment and or distraction. I decided to text a friend and try to kill some time. We talked about the most random things and reminisced about the school year that had just finally ceased. The conversation kept me from looking out the window for a while helping the time pass. When I finally did look up from my phone we were almost there, and I could have screamed from all the excitement that I felt. We were on our way to Lone Oak Campground in East Canaan CT, my favorite place in the whole world.
We pulled into the driveway in our black Chevy truck, with our camper dragging along behind us. The driveway was pretty long but it went straight through the woods and ran alongside a river, so there was always plenty to look at. I saw kids trying to tube down the rocky river, and climb the giant oak trees. Once we got up to the main part of the campground, it was hectic with tons of people doing different things. There was so much to see. Long green grass filled the fields that were covered with kids at play. The sandy playground was filled with shrieks of delight from the toddlers. The pool area was taken by some learning how to swim and others trying to do some crazy tricks into the water without the lifeguard seeing. In the arcade it was hard to focus with all the noise from all the different games taking place at once. The store and office area was full of lots of commotion. Various other people were checking in and did not have any idea were to go, but lucky for me, I knew exactly where I was going. We drove up the big hill towards the woods through Chucks Circle. The moment we got into the woods we were instantly hit by the smell of pine and smoke that I loved. This smell meant I was in my sanctuary. The scenery was different up in the woods, less hectic and more serine. Once we pulled the trailer into our little site in the pine filled woods we had to set up. As we set up the camper it was like getting a new room and being able to arrange it any way we wanted to. I of course did not care where anything was as long as I could find it when I needed it. My neighbor would have scolded me for the giant heap of stuff thrown all over my side of the back of the camper, but I’d break that news to her later. Once I was done with my idea of “setting up” I decided to take a walk and see what had changed in my little piece of heaven since last time I was there.
After my long walk I was actually pretty tired from the long day’s journey. So I decided to go back to the camper, do my nightly routine then hit the hay. I changed into my comfy pajamas and washed my face, and texted my friend. I told her how my day had gone and everything that I had done, including unpacking. She replied with “You must be really tired you should get some sleep, and in regards to your cleaning and neatness skills, well, I have seen your room so I’m not surprised the camper is any different haha”. Once I finished with our conversation I turned on my iPod and drifted off to sleep with the thoughts of tomorrow and the days to come rolling around in my head.
All of the next 14 days seemed like one big blur. These were the best days of my summer and I did basically the same thing on each one. I would wake up at about 9:00 A.M. and take a long relaxing shower. The shower each morning was like rinsing away all of yesterday good or bad and starting new. After my shower I would put on my baiting suit and pack my pool bag with all the daily necessities; a towel, suntan lotion, my iPod, my phone, and money for the delicious food. After packing I went on my way to the pool area. I had to walk through the cool, damp woods into the bright sunlight. The feeling of the sun hitting my face always sent shivers down my spine. I walked in the sunlight by Loris pond and up the hill to the pool gate. The smell of chlorine tickled my nose for the first few minutes, but then it wore off. I walked to the end of the seconded pool and put my stuff besides the empty chair. There was absolutely no breeze making the sun’s rays very hot. I would lie in the sun for hours on end only getting up to cool off in the pool and to buy the occasional order of smiley fries. But once the sun went away my source of heat changed along with my clothes. My brother and I made a tepee out of logs and twigs and created a roaring fire used for s’mores. At the end of the day I did my nightly routine as always and went to bed. This is how I spent my 14 days a year in my Fruitopia.
After my stay ceased I had to return home to my normal life and responsibilities. But there was something semi-new waiting for me when I got home, a friend. A friend that had always been there in the stone house. A friend that I had a lot to catch up on with. A friend that had always been on the other side of the fence…
